How To Valet A Triumph
Below is a copy of the instructions that used to be pasted on the valeting bay wall for trainees when we ran a restoration workshop...
HOW TO VALET A CAR – THE CORRECT WAY (INSTRUCTIONS FOR QUILLER TRAINEES)
STEAM CLEAN ENGINE IF REQUIRED & WHEELS - ONLY USE A CAPFUL OF THE SOLUTION PER AIR GUN LOAD OF WATER - I.E ABOUT 1:100 CONCENTRATE. USE AT LEAST 3 AIR GUN LOADS ON A DIRTY ENGINE.
COLD JET BLAST THE WHEELARCHES THOROUGHLY
REMEMBER TO RUN COLD WATER THROUGH THE STEAMCLEANER & THEN RELEASE THE PRESSURE BEFORE PUTTING IT AWAY. COIL HOSE UP NEATLY
HOSE CAR OVER WITH HOSE (CAN USE PRESSURE WASHER ON COLD SETTING IF CAR IS FIXED HEAD) – THIS IS TO REMOVE ANY SURFACE GRIT SO YOU DON’T RUB IT IN & SCRATCH THE PAINTWORK
WASH ALL HARD (IE NOT HOOD) BODY COMPONENTS INCLUDING GLASS WITH CAR SHAMPOO – DO NOT USE A DETERGENT WITH SALT LIKE FAIRY LIQUID. USE JUST ENOUGH SHAMPOO TO COVER THE BOTTOM OF THE BUCKET. IF THE BUCKET IS DIRTY THEN CLEAN IT. DO NOT USE A BUCKET WITH ANY OIL PRODUCTS. IN FACT THROW AWAY OILY BUCKETS. IF THE WATER GETS VERY DIRTY REPLACE IT.
USE AEROSOL TYRE CLEANER FOR TYRES
HOSE CAR DOWN TO REMOVE ALL SUDS
ALLOW CAR TO AIR DRY OR CHAMOIS OFF
APPLY POLISH WITH A SOFT LINT-FREE CLOTH EG MUTTON CLOTH TO ALL PAINTED SURFACES. GLASS IS NOT A PAINTED SURFACE. USE ELBOW GREASE IF NECCESSARY TO REMOVE STAINS. DON’T USE TOO MUCH POLISH – YOU’RE ONLY MAKING YOUR JOB HARDER – TRUST ME ON THIS.
ANY REALLY TOUGH STAINS USE T-CUT – READ THE T-CUT INSTRUCTIONS ON THE TIN
USE RUBBER AND VINYL CLEANER ON ALL RUBBER SURFACES EG DOOR TO GLASS WEATHERSTRIPS AND PVC HOODS. LEAVE MOHAIR & DUCK HOODS ALONE, EXCEPT TO PICK OFF ANY BITS OF DRIED BIRDSHIT AND THEN GIVE A LIGHT BRUSHING OVER ANY STAINED AREAS WITH THE SUEDE SHOE BRUSH
USE CHROME CLEANER ON ALL CHROME – USE ELBOW GREASE. AGAIN USING A HUGE AMOUNT OF POLISH DOES NOT MAKE THE JOB QUICKER
USE BLACK TRIM CLEANER ON ANY BLACK BUMPERS OR OTHER BLACK TRIM
BUFF OF THE BODY POLISH
BUFF OF THE CHROME POLISH
USE GLASS CLEANER ON ALL WINDOWS - USE THE NEW WHITE PASTE STUFF
REMOVE RUBBISH FROM INTERIOR. DON’T MESS WITH ANY CUSTOMER'S PERSONAL EFFECTS IN THE CAR. EMPTY ASHTRAYS
HOOVER CARPETS
USE INTERIOR FABRIC CLEANER FOR ANY STAINS ON ALL FABRIC TRIM. USE HIDE FOOD FOR LEATHER
CLEAN HARD PLASTIC TRIM (EXCLUDING STEERING & PEDAL COVERS) WITH VINYL AND LEATHER CLEANER EG SON OF A GUN OR ARMOUR-ALL
CLEAN INTERIOR GLASS WITH GLASS CLEANER
DON’T FORGET TO DO THE BOOT INTERIOR - LEAVE THE CUSTOMERS STUFF LIKE YOU FOUND IT OR PLACE IT MORE NEATLY IF IT WAS IN A REAL MUDDLE
DONE PROPERLY THIS IS A 1 – 2 HOUR JOB (IE NOT 20 MINUTES OR 5 HOURS!)
